About

Evgeniia Strashko is an interdisciplinary visual and textile artist based in Woodbridge, New Jersey. She has approximately fifteen years of independent artistic practice and works primarily with dry felting, hand embroidery, acrylic on textile, and mixed media. Her figurative work is connected to naive art and brings together people, birds and animals, saints, and personal interpretations of sacred imagery. Strashko’s exhibition history began in St. Petersburg in 2021 and continued in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she participated in group exhibitions and presented solo bodies of work. Since relocating to New Jersey, she has exhibited at the Barron Arts Center and Gallery on Main in Woodbridge and participated in the online exhibition What The Folk II with Carnival Gallery. Her work was also included in the 6th International Festival of Naive Art New Day in St. Petersburg. Her works are held in private collections in the United States, Australia, Europe, Georgia, and Russia.

Statement

I make textile and mixed-media works with wool, fabric, thread, paper, acrylic on textile, hand embroidery, and dry felting. My work is mostly figurative. People, birds, animals, saints, and symbolic figures often share the same space. Women are woven into this same world, and I often show their fragility and tenderness together. I watch birds and animals around me every day and keep written notes about what I see. Their behavior, small movements, and presence stay with me and later enter my work. I think a lot about how human life exists beside the living world and how easily we stop noticing that connection. Sacred images are another important part of my work. I often use the structure of traditional Christian icons freely, turning familiar forms into personal sacred images. I like bringing the sacred closer to ordinary life. I think of saints first as people: imperfect, making choices, and finding their own way of relating to the world around them. Naive art feels natural to me because it gives me freedom from academic rules. I value its directness, symbolism, and closeness to a child’s way of seeing. A simple image can carry a lot without becoming complicated. The process of making matters as much to me as the finished image. Felting and embroidery are slow and repetitive. They calm me and give me time to turn inward and hear my own thoughts. I usually begin with a figure or an image and let it change while I work, following the material one stitch, one piece of fabric, or one piece of wool at a time.
